Flexible TableTop Roll playing game thingy (Sat Sep 16, 2006 2:53 am) Quote

When I'm not coming up with stories, making computer games, playing computer games, exploring the internet, making fun of everyone I know, denying my existance, petting my cat, plotting to take over the world, playing role playing games, playing card games, being lazy, kaking random people etc. I like to make role playing game systems. Non of which I've had the attention span to create a whole thingy for but, enough to get the gist of it. So here's a system thats annoying the death out of me.

Vocab:
Phase: A series of actions
Sub-Phase: One set of turns done by each character
Turn: A characters set of actions.

Stats
Attack
Defense
Speed
Intelligence.

Other Stats
HP
AP
Intiative.
There may or may not be MP

Stats tend to be from 3 to 7.

Actions:
During Each sub-phase the turn order is decided by intiative. players of equal intiative are considered to be moving simultaneously.
Once everyone has made their move, everyone moves onto the next sub-phase, ignoring everyone out of AP. If everyone is out of AP, than you move on to the next Phase, in which everyone's AP is restored to full.

During your turn you may you may take any number of actions under the following conditions.

1. You may not take an action that you don't have enough AP for.
2. You may not take an action that uses a stat whose value is less than the number of times you've used an action that involves that stat. For example. If you have an attack of 3 you may not take more than 3 attack actions per phase.
3. If choose to use more than one stat on your turn, you may only take two actions. If all your actions on one turn only involve one stat, you may take as many as possible.

Taking Actions: When you choose to make an actions you must spend at least one AP on it, and you can spend as much AP on it as you want. Than roll dice equal to the amount of AP spent. Add the total together and that becomes the value of that action. If the value is greater than the difficulty of the action, it succeeds.

Reflexive Actions: If someone makes an action that involves another player, that player may make a reflexive action. Reflexive actions still require alloting AP for dice. Reflexive actions have the same restrictions as normal actions plus.

You may only take up to 2 actions of the same stat, or you can take 1 action.
Reflexive actions cannot involve concentrating, hard thinking, or similar. So no aiming and stuff on a reflex.

If you wish to defy the action that is causing you to react, your action value is added to the orignal actions difficulty. If you wish to aid it, your action value is added to the original actions value. If your action does neither, it probably isn't a reflexive action and is therefore illegal.

The base difficulty for attacking anything is zero. So in order to not get hit, you must do a reflexive action. If you wish to block it with your weapon, use the attack stat, if you wish to block through some other method, use defense, if you wish to dodge it use speed.

Simple actions, such as walking or talking don't cost AP unless you are in a contest.

Simple Actions that require some effort such as running may cost AP but automatically succeed.

I think thats the gist of it anyhow. Anyway, the system is inteaded for flexible actions, but its TOO flexible. I want to restrict what character potential, without decreasing the flexiblity of choosing what stat you are using and how much effort you put into it.
