It was simple you just had a few text boxes you put in your charcter stats and your oppeneont stats and click attack job done

But it was too simple. No strategy. No way to change up the fighting, other than an occasional random miss. As Sky said, the old battle hack was nothing more than a timer--the person with the best stats won. Nothing to it. We are trying to actually make it a turn-based fight, with stats, many attack or action options, etc. We want the dueling area to be a real PvP-focused (probably) game, where we can fight each other, and there won't be a predetermined outcome. This will be the only real way we will be able to do that, as, in RPs, it is not really possible to effectively fight other RPers. Of coarse, there will also be the section on each post where you RP your character's actions, but you take cues from what the hack tells you happens.

My suggestions.

This is something I integrated into a paper and dice rpg.
what if you have like a preperation option as well as attacking and spells. This option would cost a turn, but add to strategy.
Examples/Suggestions:
Prepare for Attack: Increases evasion rate against attacks.
Prepare for Magic: Increases Evasion rate against spells.
Prepare to Attack: Next attack has increased accuracy.
Prepare to go all out: Next attack has increased damage.
Prepare your Mind: Next spell is better.
Prepare to CounterStrike: Decreases evasion rate, but gives you an additional free attack.
Prepare to Defend: Next attack against has less damage.

Preparing would put you into a state with the mentioned bonus at the cost of your turn. So if a person is on the ropes, they can prepare to defend or prepare for an attack. If a person wants to make sure he lands a hit, they can prepare to attack. Etc. Etc.

IF you want to add complexity you could create an AP (action points) system to allow multiple actions in one turn relative to AP.

That idea sounds nice, but there also needs to be a No Prepare option that doesn't waste a turn so you can attack normally.

Kind of sort of, but less specific. Gaurd is generic, and Concentrate is generic for specific types of games. This is to add STRATEGY.

I mean the function of guard and concentrate are similar to the prepare things. Guard and concentrate add strategy. Basically the same ammount as your prepare abilities, but with less ease of getting around. Note that the enemy knows everything you're doing. Also, the double-attack thing is covered by the multiple attack powers. That's their intent.

Lucifer, why would there NOT be a no-prepare skill? Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to attack at all! (not trying to be harsh or offensive, here.)

My experience with gaurd, is that you use it when you know the opponent is going to hit for a lot. Concentrate when it appears tends to be a crucial point to the specific strategy of the game.

And preparation was meant to be an additional option, it does not eliminate the basic options of attack and skill and magic and such.
