wondering the slum streets of midgar, lithis thinks to himself"why am i here?, who am i?" the thopughts pounding into his head so badly that at times he came close to passing out. turning down an alley, he runs into two thugs. at first he turns to run but hesitates when he notices that they aren't even looking his way. they are preoccupied with something else. curiously he takes a closer look. what he found shocked him. a little girl, no older than 8 was being beaten and kicked by these men. without thinking lithis took action.
lithis: hey! leave her alone!
thug#1: who the hell are you?
thug#2: what are you some kind of hero?
with that, the second thug kicked the girl so hard she spat blood. suddenly lithis began to shake. his eyes roled back and he dropped to the ground. something was happening to him and him an he didn't know what it was. some how, lithis had blacked out. upon awakening. he found himself on the floor of the alley. the little girl was shaking his arm to awake him, she looked really fightened. the two guys that had been there earlier were gone.
lithis: what happened?
girl: you killed those men.
lithis: what? how?
girl: you changed into something. something scary and then you killed them...
lithis: wha....
girl: i think you should go, the cops are coming. i can here there sirens, there not that far away!
lithis: the edge of the city is about five minutes from here. i'll be gone before they get here.
getting up, lithis walked to the edge of the alley, ready to run. just as he was going, the girls called out.
girl: wait, take me with you. i have nowhere to go. please.
lithis: where are your parents?
girl: they went to the rebel base to fight. we can go there.
lithis.....ok. whats your name
girl: kairi.
lithis:kairi....come on!
picking her up and putting her on his back, lithis carried kairi through the slums towards the edge of the city. moments from the the entrance to midgar, the cops had somehow gotten close, because lithis could here there footsteps. it must have been a whole squad. pushing harder, lithis and kairi made it out of the city and it to the wasteland outside. putting kairi down, lithis relaxed a little.
lithis: even though were out of the city, they'll still chase us.
kairi: i know. the rebel base is north from here, come on!
together they headed north, twords the rebel base.

traveling for days, lithis and kairi hadn't run into anything. no law enforcement, no enemy, nothing. extremely tired and without food, they decided to stop for a while.
kairi: i don't understand! why is it taking so long? we should have been there by now!
lithis: as long as where away from midgar. its okay. speaking of which, why were you in that alley all alone?
kairi: my parents left me with my brother, to go fight at the rebel base. they left over a year ago and i haven't heard from them.
lithis: so where's your brother?
kairi: a couple of days ago, a man from shinra corp. had come and left a letter form him. i don't know what the letter said but, after he read it he disappeared. i......
just then,something had burst through the ground. un sure of what it was, lithis grabbed kairi and stepped backward. as the dirt settled, lithis could tell it was some kind of creature. it looked like a slug of some sorts. it was bleeing, as if it had been attacked, but still capable of moving. rearing it's head up, the creature had spit some kind of goo at lithis. it landed around his feet and rapidly hardened. then slowly, it began to creep towards him and kairi.
placing her on the ground behind him, lithis turned to face the creature which was now upon him. suddenly a wave of fire had engulfed the beast. bewildered, lithis looked in the direction it had come from. to his shock, it was a group shinra troops, led by a member of SOLDIER.
letting out a small chuckle, the officer looked at lithis and kairi with a smirk.
SOLDIER: so, the two of you actually got pretty far. but it's about time you were caught. captain, take this girl to the slums where she's from. she doesn't desearve to breathe fresh air.
captain: yes ma'am
SOLDIER: as for the rest of you, grab the experiment. hojo isn't done with him.
lithis: experiment? what experiment?
SOLDIER: don't play dumb. you know what you are, and what you are to become.
lithis: become? what am i to become?
SOLDIER:*sigh* the ultimate weapon.
lithis:!
