"I... nnh! I Know that you had no clues to let you know that his spell was not offensive, and I agree with your decision to absorb the spell... but you attacked next, not the mage... I believe he may still be an ally, and we should not harm him in any way--Ergh!!" Netheroth doubles over again, and, using the one arm to support the other, made a twisting motion with his hand, ending in a closed fist. The sphere encasing Odin's doom magic grew brighter, more opaque, and then collapsed upon itself. Both spells dissappeared with a flash. "Besides," Netheroth grinned wryly, "With You, Me, Cloud, Payne, and Eden ready to stop him if the boy proves to be traitorous, we shouldn't have too much a problem, OK?" Netheroth begins to head in Cloud's direction. "Now... let's go help that new warrior over there... I'm interested in those swords of his... and though Darkrist could probably slaughter those human soldiers for an eternity, quite a few are getting around him."

Darkrist continues killing soldiers, but, as Netheroth said, he can't kill them as fast as they are coming.

Odin follows Netheroth over to the new warrior, talking as they walked.

"True, we could stop him. But at what price? Armies are large, like this one before us, so they can win with numbers. But clearly, there are casualties. Would you risk someone, possibly yourself, dieing just for the sake of a potential ally? I know I'm new to this group as well, and there is no way for me to prove my allegiance, but that's not going to stop me from protecting Sky. I need him."

Odin turned back to keep an eye on the mage.

The samurai noticed the person approaching him and immediately broke into questioning.

"Who are you?"

Northern Capital - Detention Center

"You talk a lot," Cloud said to the Samurai. "And besides, I've got a lot of questions for you as well." He looked over to the stream of Shinra soldiers that were coming their way. They couldn't afford to talk any longer. Although Payne was holding back the solders that got bast Darkrist, he would have to recharge at some point (his gun runs off of his own energy) and would be completely defenseless. Cloud quickly grasped one of his materia and cast a thunder spell into the group of soldiers. Because they were so close together, a thunder spell would affect many of them. However, the power was dispersed, and it only did minor damage to them. It served it's purpose, though, as the soldiers progress was halted for a moment as they gathered their bearings. Payne and Darkrist would be free to kill off a large number of the confused soldiers.

Cloud tried to answer the samurai as quickly as he could, simply pointing to people and giving their names. "Odin, Netheroth, Payne and Eden, Artemis," he pointed to her standing on the building, "Sky and Vincet Strife. Best to leave those two alone for now. I'm Cloud, and if I didn't mention someone's name it's because I have no clue what the hell it is."

He cleaved an enemy that got too close using the large Dragonbuster. He then decided that he had told the samurai enough and needed to assist Payne before he was cornered. Cloud could already see the beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Payne could go for at least fifteen more minutes, but he'd surely kill himself if he continued at the rate he was. He'd be fine if someone helped him, and that's exactly what Cloud did, jumping into the fray (literally) and hacking away the soldiers that tried to ambush the people behind him. He hoped they would save the small talk for later and get their feuding done at another time. After they left, he was sure there would be plenty of time for that.

Sky and Vincet continued to block each other's blows effectively. It was becoming apparent to Sky that this battle was going nowhere, and if they didn't get out of there quickly they would surely be caught by the Shinra. When he and Vincet finally broke for a moment, he mentally tried to figure out who was there. Artemis and her group had arrived earlier. Though his aura-sensing was absolutely terrible, he had become accustomed to Artemis' presence, and since the auras surrounding her were very similar, he concluded that it was her group- elves. Cloud was here, Payne and Eden...

"What's wrong, Sky?" Vincet taunted. "You aren't attacking as ferociously as before. You aren't thinking about running away, are you?"

Sky simply glared at him again.

"I never recalled the great Sky Strife as a coward. But I suppose twenty or so years of hiding in the shadows will do that to you." Vincet smiled. He was getting to Sky, exactly what he wanted. When Sky was angry, he attacked with more force, but he was slower. If he could make Sky lose his concentration, he would surely get an opening and spear him through the back with his Slasher. Sweet persuasion, he thought.

"I was never a coward," Sky responded, "but I knew when to retreat."

Vincet laughed. "Oh really? I never recall your troop ever pulling out of a battle, no matter how high the casualties were."

Sky was furious. "That was a different time, Vincet! Don't even bring that up!"

"Why? Those were your glory days! Following in your 'daddy's' footsteps," vincet said, smiling. He was definitely getting to Sky now.

Sky yelled as he charged toward Vincet. Vincet simply waited for the right moment to "Flash" behind Sky and quickly put an end to this nonsense. Sky rushed toward him, swinging his blade forward. Perfect. Vincet flashed out of the way, right toward Sky's exposed back. Or, so he thought.

"I've got you read!" Sky yelled as he finished spinning around, his blade crushing Vincet's side. That bastard! Sky thought. Trying to sneak behind me, hit a weak spot...

Sky quickly thrust a barrage of blows at Vincet. Vincet managed to block them, but he was quickly being pushed backward toward the Detention Center. His plan had backfired. He was caught off guard, and Sky's powerful attacks eliminated all possibility of recovery. He couldn't even think about using "Flash"; all of his energy was being poured into deflecting Sky's attacks. He quickly felt his back press against the Detention center. Sky swung from the left and smashed into Vincet's sword. He then put his hand on the back of his blade and pushed Vincet into the wall, raising him off of his feet. The wall dented in slightly around Vincet's body.

"A good battle plan," Sky assessed. "Strike when the enemy isn't looking, hit a blind spot. I'm sure it's worked for you dozens of times."

Vincet smiled. How can he remain so cool? A thrust right now would certainly kill him by his own blade! Sky thought.

"However, there's one flaw in your ability. You lack any further strategy behind it. You assume the enemy won't be able to track your movements."

Vincet was beginning to see what Sky was talking about.

"You taunted me earlier for using the same maneuver again and again. But you didn't follow your own advice. That was exactly where you were heading for, every single time. I would catch your figure starting to blur and swing again. Regardless of the strength of the blow, you had to stop moving and block it. After a few attacks, I could clearly see you were trying to go around my back."

Vincet was amazed. Shinra had assured him that no one could see "Flash".

Sky continued, "So when I next attacked, instead of swinging with a pathetically weak attack to stop your movement, I simply let the Slasher's movement carry me, swinging around and into your side."

Vincet was now confused. "Why are you telling me this?"

Sky let him down from the wall. "So you'll be more of a challenge next time." Sky had no worries about letting him down. Vincet's voice was becoming weaker. No doubt he was becoming unable to fight, something that was happening to them both.

"You're letting me go?"

Sky chuckled. "I'm done here. I don't have time to waste on you right now, Vincet. And neither do you," he said, motioning to a helicopter that was beginning to lower itself down. It was obvious to Sky that this wasn't carrying troops- it had the Astolorian symbol on the side. This was Vincet's ride.

Vincet growled, and Sky laughed at him. Vincet tried to punch him, but Sky quickly grabbed his fist before it could make contact. "Don't make me change my mind," he warned.

Vincet nodded. Though they were bitter enemies, complete opposites in every way despite their similar genetic makeup, they still had a bond between them. They had been fighting for as long as Vincet could remember, and somehow a convoluted friendship had developed between the two.

Vincet started to walk toward the helicopter, which was now hovering low enough for Vincet to grab the rail and pull himself into it, but he stopped halfway there. He turned and addressed Sky. "I should tell you something."

Sky frowned. "What?"

Vincet pointed up. "That barrier," he began, "requires a lot of energy to run it."

Sky was totally lost. "What's your point?"

Vincet shook his head. "Now that the whole city is in chaos, they won't hesitate to cut power to the residential districts."

Now it was making sense. The barrier was able to be taken offline because it wasn't running at full strength. Now, Shinra wouldn't hesitate to turn the barrier back on.

"It's not just made to keep things out. Remember that," Vincet warned as he grabbed hold of the rail and not-so-gracefully pulled himself into it. He flicked Sky off as it flew away, and Sky just smiled.
