Staff and FF Haven (Wed Oct 08, 2008 10:33 pm) Quote

I was just thinking that shouldn't we...

First, set-up a new set of staff members, I mean I can't remember the last time Artemis was on, and Yawgmoth seems like a a faraway memory for me. I'm not here to suggest who these new staff members should be, but I do think it is pointless to keep some of the more ancient staff around anymore.

Secondly, since we're doing a whole new EP "Revival" thing, wouldn't it make more sense for new members and what not to start up the whole FF Haven RP again. It has always in the past been our most popular and interesting RP around, and I would be happy to help with any restoration in creating a new one.

So, anyone liking these crazy cat woman ideas?

I'd be all for revival of the ORIGINAL RP, but I don't know the future plot for it and I think Sky had it all planned out.

Also, the people who have staff positions have them for a reason. I wouldn't want to elect new mods anyway; not without Sky's permission.

However, I do see your point. But we COULD always try to get them back a little harder, now couldn't we? I MISS YOTHRA!

I'm sure we can get Yawgmoth back. I mean... I can just call him. I dunno about Artemis.

Getting Yawg back it'd be nice, as I said earlier I just feel like the staff team is no longer what it used to be, so either bringe em back or change em up for something new.

Definitely want Yothra back, but I doubt we're ever going to get Art back...from what Sky's said, she doesn't even want to talk about the forum.

With regards to the staff:

I'm perfectly ok with hiring new staff, but I fail to see the point in hiring new staff members when there's a lack of forum members to begin with. What's the point in giving the active people staff powers at this point? We'd have a forum with two admins and a couple of mods, and no regular members. Pointless pointless is pointless. I see your point completely, though, if we actually had any activity; the inactivity of the current staff is unacceptable, though Artemis' admin status is going nowhere (co-founder, etc), even if she doesn't come on anymore. But I agree that new staff should be hired in the event the forum comes to life again.

With regards to the original FFHaven RP:

I'm also ok with re-starting the original RP, but none of the storyline can go. That's what makes the universe--the storyline we've developed. Removing any part of any events that have happened is basically killing the creative core that is the RP. Abbey is also correct in saying that there is a rough sketching of the core plot, and scrapping it kind of kills all the work put into it.

The way I took "restarting" was to divide the forum into locations again and approach it the way we approached FFHaven. That worked... for a while. But there are specific reasons we switched to this format, and I don't believe that the format itself is flawed--it's just a mere lack of participants that ruins it. Dividing the forum into locations only serves to create one-person threads scattered every which way with no core plot points and no progression whatsoever.

Not that any of that is happening currently, but as it is any post in that thread would be plot progression where as dividing it creates room for many many posts with absolutely no meaning.

Sorry if I'm really cynical, but I seriously don't see the forum coming back. The people on the internet today really aren't role players; we're a dying breed. People are more interested in watching stupid videos or trying to publicly humiliate people to make themselves feel superior. It's sick, it's wrong, and it's the internets.

I'd be ecstatic if someone proved me wrong.

I could always try to refer people from a HUGE RP site that I go to...There are a few REALLY good RPers there that I'm pretty sure I could convince to come here.

Stats for that forum: Most users ever online was 205
Threads: 7,814, Posts: 257,618, Members: 3,469
On average, there are about 130 people on at a time

So...yeah, there's a good supply of people I could get to come here Razz It wouldn't take much effort for me to get them here...hopefully...I'll try tonight and see how it goes...

If you want the site to survive, you'll probably need to expand. A simple idea right? Chances are, I'll only point out things others have already thought of. However, I'll add my two cents anyway.

I wouldn't go as far as calling roleplayers a "dying breed", because a few of the largest online communities in existence still have prominent roleplaying boards. However, those communities also have a lot more than just roleplaying. So perhaps the ideal is dying; a masked death well-hidden behind a curtain? Or perhaps the survivors are simply hiding behind a curtain of their own...

Anyways, if you want activity to return, I'd first recommend offering something else to the members. Not as a replacement idea, but rather, as a supplement. Anyone can become a good roleplayer~ but those potential people need something to draw them in. Meanwhile, the experienced roleplayers just need a reason to come here.

Good roleplayers are indeed harder to find, especially when you don't look in the right places. Which brings me to my next point: Networking. Affiliations. Can't depend solely on person-to-person references, and random appearances if you want a thriving website, no? It'll take a bit more to spread a website's influence across teh interwebs, though starting with just a group of friends and friends' friends is always a good start.

Providing a service is usually a good way to promote growth. It draws in people, as well as offering them something they may want to contribute to.

Just some ranting from a voice from the past... Given my personal lack of activity here, I'm of course not going to comment on anyone else's. Though, now that I'm talking to Abbey more often, it probably wouldn't be too hard for her to drag me back into activity here, if others return as well.

The motivation in your mind is the strength that will help you learn. And the power in your heart is the strength that will take you beyond your limits...

Anyway, I think for the FF Haven restarting business, if I'm authorized to do so, I'd like to put up a poll for two weeks so that members can vote whether or not FF Haven should be restarted or not.

Makes sense to me since a lot of the members intertwined with the storyline now are long gone, so it would be best to give the new ones we have a fresh start in the matter.

I personally don't plan on doing anymore message board roleplaying. I've started my career, finished school, and there are just too many other things I want to focus my time and energy on. Its not something I really have the desire to keep up with anymore.

I've been spending what little free time I have playing video games. I'm most interested in forming a gaming guild. Unfortunately, I'm a bit lacking in leadership skills, I've always been a better right hand man, then the front guy.

That's unfortunate :'( Can you at least come back to talk every once in a while? You were one of my favorites of the original members (well, that's not a COMPLETE truth: I have a tendency to like the first 10 members of any forum)...

Well, if you want a plate of cookies at any time, COME AND TALK (you don't have to RP if you don't want to >.< Even if you can NEVER grow out of it...but you can be too busy; THAT I understand.)

Also...how would you form this gaming guild? I'm interested Razz

I'm certainly willing to continue to be active here. I just won't join in the rping.I will probably be posting a lot in the Creative section. I have ideas I really want to work on, and this is probably one of the best places to present them.

In regards to a gaming guild, I don't want a giant zerg mmo guild. I want to do a more classic, pre-mmo style guild; small numbers, strict entry and participation guidlines, and playing not just one but multiple games. A top tier, well known guild like those of the past, like the once great FPS guild, League of Angels. Don't know if you've heard of them, but they were considered to be one of the best before MMOs became popular, and changed the definition of the word guild.

I'm currently working on getting a board up for a guild; I'll post the link when I have it ready. I'm going to have some pretty strict rules, so be warned.

The problem I've had in the past when trying to form a guild is that no one wants to follow rules. Everyone wants to do their own thing. Now granted, I don't want anyone telling me what I should play and how I should play it. However I do believe that in any game where a member of a guild is active, they should abide the standards of conduct, and represent the guild in a positive manner.

If any one is interested in this guild, You now know what my position is and what I expect. I'd love to have feedback on this, but perhaps I should start a new thread instead of hijacking this one, eh?

I'll be posting the url in another thread when I get the chance.

As for the topic at hand:

Staff: I think we should cut down on staff. We don't need 10 people moderating 5. If we get back on track and the community grows, then maybe consider 1 or 2 more. Frankly, staffing is the least of our concerns, as Sky said.

FFHaven: If there was any rp I would consider continuing, it would be this one. However, I think the problem wasn't just activity, but content. Never in the 4-5 years of being part of this community have I ever criticized someone else's rping, but I feel I have to say this:

During the last few threads of FFHaven, I felt like I was the only person besides Sky who was moving along the main storyline. Sure others were posting, but it was mostly side plots, or they were conservative posts where nothing really happened, and it was just to get a response from someone else.

To be fair, I was guilty of this on occasion myself, but whenever the thread would begin to stagnate, I would do something drastic to pulll it back again.

I also felt the we were losing the Final Fantasy element. I tried at the very end to bring in some FF characters to bring back that flavor, but the whole thing was already on the down slope by then.

Don't get me wrong, everyone here are great roleplayers, but I felt there was a lot of irrelavance to many of the things that were happening in that rp. They may have been great on their own, but in relation to the events of Astoloria, I'm not so sure.

I really don't want to offend anyone but sometimes things just need to be said.

Thats my two cents, as it were.

The only thing I can think of to reduce the number of staff is to demote people who are inactive...I hope they'd understand if they came back >.< I'll do it now, I guess, but if Sky changes his mind, we can re-mod them Razz Maybe just Sky and I should be mods for now? Well...you if you still want to be, Kane. I can't think of any other active mods >.< I don't think there are any >.<

Oh, and I'm 99% sure Rhi's not coming back
